Skillens Jewellers
William Skillen, a skilled watchmaker and jeweller, started this business in 1891, after 5 years training (with no wages in those days!), with the help of his wife Martha. The business developed over the years with customers coming from near and far for the expert and honest advice and quality products. In those days, repairs were a very strong part of the business, as the local jeweller was asked to fix everything from a bicycle to a watch, indeed anything that had moving mechanical parts in it. The watchmaker was in demand. A fine tradition of quality and reliable products and service brought Skillens its success.
Our customers over the years have included John Boyd Dunlop (inventor of the pneumatic tyre), many American soldiers who were stationed here during the Second World War, Harry Ferguson (inventor of the Ferguson four wheel drive system), various Members of Parliament, and guitar virtuoso Simon McBride. The list goes on and on with many generations of customer relations.
Should you find yourself in the area, please stop into our shop. We would be happy to show you our products in person. We are located in the charming town of Castlewellan at the foot of the Mourne Mountains.
